Angioplasty in Iran

Angioplasty, also referred to as percutaneous coronary intervention, is a medical procedure that opens blocked coronary arteries resulting from coronary artery disease. It aims to restore blood flow to the heart muscle without resorting to open-heart surgery. Depending on the patient’s condition, angioplasty can be performed as an emergency intervention during a heart attack or as an elective procedure when a healthcare provider strongly suspects heart disease.

The primary objective of angioplasty is to widen narrowed or obstructed arteries using a small balloon. Although the term “angioplasty” refers specifically to the balloon technique, most modern procedures typically involve the insertion of a wire mesh tube called a stent into the artery. This stent remains in place permanently, ensuring a more unobstructed blood flow through the previously blocked artery.

The use of angioplasty has greatly improved the treatment of coronary artery disease, providing a less invasive alternative to traditional open-heart surgery. Its effectiveness and versatility make it a valuable tool in managing heart health and mitigating the risks associated with heart disease. As technology advances and techniques continue to evolve, angioplasty will likely remain an essential procedure for improving blood flow and overall cardiovascular health.

Angioplasty involves the insertion of a long, thin tube known as a catheter into a blood vessel, as depicted in the accompanying image. The catheter is then carefully maneuvered to the obstructed coronary artery, with a minuscule balloon situated at its tip. Upon reaching the constricted region of the heart artery, the balloon is inflated, effectively compressing the plaque or blood clot against the artery’s walls. This process widens the artery, thereby enhancing blood flow and reducing the blockage. The increased space allows for improved circulation, ultimately contributing to the overall effectiveness of angioplasty in addressing cardiovascular conditions.
