Gastric Sleeve Surgery in Iran
Gastric Sleeve Surgery in Iran

Laparoscopic Gastric Sleeve surgery, also known as Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy, is a leading type of weight-loss surgery. The procedure involves removing a significant portion of the stomach, resulting in a smaller stomach with a reduced capacity for food. This, in turn, leads to a decrease in the production of ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates hunger, causing the patient to eat less food and feel full sooner. As a result, rapid weight loss can be achieved.

In brief, during gastric sleeve surgery, surgeons remove a large portion of the stomach, creating a smaller stomach pouch shaped like a banana. This not only restricts food intake, but also reduces the production of hunger hormones, like ghrelin, leading to decreased appetite and cravings. This dual effect may help to prevent overeating and the regain of lost weight, making the surgery a potential long-term weight management solution.

Gastric sleeve or gastric bypass?

While both gastric sleeve and gastric bypass surgeries are effective weight loss procedures, each has unique characteristics and may be more suitable for different patients. The selection of the appropriate procedure is based on a variety of factors, including the patient’s body mass index (BMI) and overall health. Gastric bypass is typically performed on patients with a very high BMI, while gastric sleeve is often performed on patients with a lower BMI. Gastric bypass can lead to more rapid weight loss in less time, but may also have more potential side effects.
